next time, get an editor? March 2, 2010 Lubug (St. Paul, MN, United States) Could not even finish this book. (I finish almost everything.) It would have been a good magazine article if properly edited. Full of meandering emails between author & others, minute details of caring for her dog (clipping nails - seriously!), etc.
Also love how she repeatedly dissed the shelter in MN that saved 250 animals from Katrina. Apparently, they didn't return her phone calls right away when they were busy sending people to the Gulf, and they wouldn't promise to pay her vet bills unless she brought the dog to the shelter, so she made rude remarks about "the shelter in Minnesota" throughout. Funny that she assumes that the shelter would not have taken good care of Kate - the shelter in question took in dogs in worse physical shape than Kate and lovingly nursed them back to health. (I think it's telling that she doesn't name the shelter. Perhaps she realizes at some level that her allegations could not stand scrutiny and might subject her to a libel suit if anyone wanted to bother bringing one.)
What a self-centered mess. I'm baffled by the people who think this is such an incredible book. (Perhaps there just aren't many books on this subject, so no basis for comparison?) It makes me want to send them my random email correspondence & see whether they'd give it rave reviews also. The title is also somewhat misleading. She calls the dog "8-State Kate" because they traveled through 8 states on the way to Minnesota. I thought the name was going to have some relevance to the story. If this is an award-winner in indie publishing, there must be some pretty ragged stuff out there.
Wow! What a great book a must have to any collection. February 14, 2010 Brandy Oates "Steele N Oates Farm" (Westminster, SC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jenny I just want to thank you for writing the book about Kate. Melissa Tooley gave it to me for Christmas and it was one of those books that after you read it, you take a couple of days to let it all sink in. You are such an insperation and give me the will to drive forward to help with the Rescue of these wonderful ACD's in the world.
Thank you again

Changing the world for the better, one animal at a time. January 11, 2010 C. Korpi (Minneapolis, MN) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had the good fortune to meet Jenny Pavlovic, author of "8 State Hurricane Kate" at a recent Pet Food Shelf fund-raiser event. Her very apparent passion (in person) for saving animals translates perfectly to the pages of her book. In it, she creates a vivid picture of the aftermath of one of the country's most devastating natural catastrophes, Hurricane Katrina, made worse by a lack of general disaster preparedness, especially regarding evacuating animals; an overabundance of bureaucratic red tape; insanely hot weather; and the sheer overwhelming numbers of animals in need.
Pavlovic actually went and did what most of us animal lovers only WISHED we could have done. What's more, by adopting Kate and chronicling the emotional/psychological/physical journey taken by this wonderful, brave dog, she shows that she was most assuredly not a disaster junkie--i.e., one who shows up for the photo op at the epicenter of the action then walks away when the public's attention wanes. She was and is in it for the long haul.
This book is a manual for selflessness, for putting animals' needs before our own because so often they truly are helpless without human intervention. Her continued efforts to facilitate rescues and adoptions, going so far as to donate profits to the 8 State Kate Fund, which provides financial relief for animals in desperate situations, again shows the depth of commitment this woman has. Every page is written authentically, from a heart as big as the 8 states she and Kate traveled.
Now, go out and read this book, then pay it forward and adopt a shelter pet!

This book demonstrates how abandoned dogs are in need of good people - EVERYDAY! January 4, 2010 Grateful (Portland, ME) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wonderful book. Although Kate was a much more challenging case, but rewarding one also, I hope it opens the eyes to pet owners that we need help in saving animals in shelter environments all over the world. PLEASE CONSIDER A SHELTER DOG OR CAT and NOT A BREEDER! There are so many beautiful, sweet, helpless animals - just look [...] - there are over 300,000 there alone, waiting to be adopted.
One of my favorites! September 19, 2009 Janet Roper (Minneapolis, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"8 State Hurricane Kate" is a story of adventure, of love, of putting your heart and soul into one individual; a story of dying, of life, of hope, of fear, and of joy. Jenny Pavlovic touched my heart with her beautiful narrative and I'm certain she'll touch yours as well. I'll warn you now that you'll want to keep a handkerchief or a box of tissues close at hand, because you're going to need them!
One of the most heart-warming parts of the book is when Kate discovers snow for the first time. It's something brand new to her, since she lived in Louisiana for most of her life. Though she suffers and goes through so much, Kate has so much spirit. Her life after Jenny rescues her is not long, but the important thing is that she is loved ever so much. This is an awe-inspiring book and I highly recommend it to any animal lover, but more importantly to ANY human being.
