Changing the world for the better, one animal at a time. January 11, 2010 C. Korpi (Minneapolis, MN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had the good fortune to meet Jenny Pavlovic, author of "8 State Hurricane Kate" at a recent Pet Food Shelf fund-raiser event. Her very apparent passion (in person) for saving animals translates perfectly to the pages of her book. In it, she creates a vivid picture of the aftermath of one of the country's most devastating natural catastrophes, Hurricane Katrina, made worse by a lack of general disaster preparedness, especially regarding evacuating animals; an overabundance of bureaucratic red tape; insanely hot weather; and the sheer overwhelming numbers of animals in need.
Pavlovic actually went and did what most of us animal lovers only WISHED we could have done. What's more, by adopting Kate and chronicling the emotional/psychological/physical journey taken by this wonderful, brave dog, she shows that she was most assuredly not a disaster junkie--i.e., one who shows up for the photo op at the epicenter of the action then walks away when the public's attention wanes. She was and is in it for the long haul.
This book is a manual for selflessness, for putting animals' needs before our own because so often they truly are helpless without human intervention. Her continued efforts to facilitate rescues and adoptions, going so far as to donate profits to the 8 State Kate Fund, which provides financial relief for animals in desperate situations, again shows the depth of commitment this woman has. Every page is written authentically, from a heart as big as the 8 states she and Kate traveled.
Now, go out and read this book, then pay it forward and adopt a shelter pet!

This book demonstrates how abandoned dogs are in need of good people - EVERYDAY! January 4, 2010 Grateful (Portland, ME) Wonderful book. Although Kate was a much more challenging case, but rewarding one also, I hope it opens the eyes to pet owners that we need help in saving animals in shelter environments all over the world. PLEASE CONSIDER A SHELTER DOG OR CAT and NOT A BREEDER! There are so many beautiful, sweet, helpless animals - just look [...] - there are over 300,000 there alone, waiting to be adopted.
One of my favorites! September 19, 2009 Janet Roper (Minneapolis, USA) "8 State Hurricane Kate" is a story of adventure, of love, of putting your heart and soul into one individual; a story of dying, of life, of hope, of fear, and of joy. Jenny Pavlovic touched my heart with her beautiful narrative and I'm certain she'll touch yours as well. I'll warn you now that you'll want to keep a handkerchief or a box of tissues close at hand, because you're going to need them!
One of the most heart-warming parts of the book is when Kate discovers snow for the first time. It's something brand new to her, since she lived in Louisiana for most of her life. Though she suffers and goes through so much, Kate has so much spirit. Her life after Jenny rescues her is not long, but the important thing is that she is loved ever so much. This is an awe-inspiring book and I highly recommend it to any animal lover, but more importantly to ANY human being.
A gripping and touching story about how animals change our lives August 17, 2009 Ingrid King I found this book to be very moving. The accounts of the author's experience helping with rescue work immediately following Katrina were gut-wrenching and difficult for me to read, but at the same time, inspirational. Thank goodness for people like Jenny and so many others, who dropped everything to assist the animals in need after this catastrophic event.
The book is also the story about how one dog can change a person in ways they never expected. As Jenny becomes more and more involved in rescue works, she forges bonds with others, both dogs and humans, that change her at a core level. I always enjoy reading books about how animal affect the life of the humans they come into contact with - this book is a gripping and touching contribution to this genre.
A tribute to the love between a woman and her rescue dog, to the Katrina animals left behind, and to all animal rescuers ... August 16, 2009 Dawn M. Kairns, author of Maggie: the dog who changed my life When Hurricane Katrina hit, the world was horrified by the loss of human life, the destruction, and the masses of people left stranded. And then the incomprehensible reality of all the animals left behind to die sank in. Jenny Pavlovic could not continue her everyday life without going to New Orleans to help care for the dogs left behind to drown or starve. Nor could she leave Kate, an older cattle dog that won her heart, to the fate of the system at Lamar Dixon, the large makeshift animal shelter in New Orleans. Against many odds, Jenny took Kate home to foster and care for her.
8 State Hurricane Kate touches us in so many ways. Yes, it is Jenny's tribute to Kate, the deep spiritual connection they shared, and how she changed Jenny's life forever. It is also a demonstration of the strength of human and canine spirit alike, and what one courageous, determined, passionate woman can do to help the dog she loved so deeply; and to then carry on Kate's legacy by rescuing other dogs from "death row."
I ached with Jenny's heartbreak in the loss of her own pets and as she encountered one health and behavior obstacle after another with Kate. I am in awe of her commitment to Kate and to dog rescue. It will warm your heart to realize the behind the scenes work of "guardian angels" across the country (that Jenny is part of) whose mission is to safely transport dogs about to be euthanized into foster homes and safe shelters nationwide.
Jenny and Kate's story will motivate readers to volunteer our own efforts to help our local homeless pets. 8 State Hurricane Kate shows that we, too, can make a difference for one animal at a time, as Jenny did for Kate, even if we can't save them all. I love Jenny's resource section in the back of her book; it lists rescue agencies and provides information for pet guardians to prepare for their pet's care in the event of an emergency or disaster situation.
I am moved by Jenny Pavlovic's incredibly huge heart, which does not stop giving when she loses Kate. She continues Kate's legacy by her ongoing animal rescue work, which she generously funds with 50% of her book profits through the 8 State Kate Fund.
You will feel a wide range of emotions as you read this inspirational love story, from sadness and loss to faith and hope. This book makes the world aware of the tragic consequences for the animals left behind in our country's greatest natural disaster. In writing this book, part of Jenny's mission is to show the world what really happened, and the heart wrenching impact on the animals left behind, most of whom lost their people forever. Having gone to Mississippi myself to work with the animals following Hurricane Katrina, I thank Jenny for writing this book so the world will now know, and I pray make certain that the animals are never left behind again.
